About UsWho Are We?Our Mission Statement
Grace United Church of Christ We Are People Rich in History...Which dates back to the days of the great 16th Century Protestant Reformation in Switzerland and Germany, when religious oppression, as well as war and famine, forced a flood of immigrants to the shores of America during the early 1700's. It was at this time that a large number of German settlers found their way to the fertile valleys of Western Maryland, carrying with them a determination to secure in this new home a freedom of religion unknown in Europe. As early as 1747 the first German Reformed Church was founded in Frederick and, as the years added fruitfully to their number, this congregation was to eventually give birth to a daughter church in the same community. Thus it was that on March 6, 1898, Grace Reformed Church was organized with 46 charter members. Added by the blessing and generous gifts of the mother Evangelical Reformed Church on West Church Street, the new Grace congregation worshipped in Trinity Church (Evangelical Reformed's first worship building). In 1901, the present location on East Second Street was purchased and the cornerstone was laid on October 18, 1903. In 1964 extensive renovation to the Sunday school was completed along with a new three-story Christian Education unit, which was dedicated in 1965. In 1998 the congregation celebrated its 100th Anniversary. Grace Church is a member congregation of the United Church of Christ created in 1957 by a merger of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Churches (for more information check out www.ucc.org and www.stillspeaking.org).
